With the price of gas as high as it is, anything to improve mileage should be done. There are several areas that routinely should be checked. First is the air filter. This filter is many times overlooked by many mechanics when performing a routine lube and oil service. Therefore after a while an air filter may become so contaminated and restricted that an insufficient amount of air will occur. Top engine performance requires a balanced amount of air and fuel. When this balance is disrupted, the engine controller will try to make adjustments to correct the imbalance. When these computer controlled adjustments hit a point engine performance and fuel mileage will suffer. Every vehicle is different as to what that point is. Be clear though that a regular inspection and replacement of a dirty air filter will increase your gas mileage.Proper tire pressure will also make a big difference in fuel mileage. Having the recommended tire pressure or even slightly higher pressure will reduce rolling resistance and allow the engine to work less and thus reduce the amount of fuel needed to propel the vehicle. Tire pressure should be checked at every service and repair however we recommend pressure to be checked on a weekly basis. Checking the tire pressure regularly will give you notice to inflate any low tire (saving gas), help avoid a tire pull and greatly reduce wear on tires (tire replacement can be expensive). Have that check engine light looked into and repaired. Most of the time, a check engine light on indicates a failure in emissions. Increased emissions translate into minor or even major loss of engine performance and top engine performance is what is needed for top fuel efficiency and the best attainable gas mileage. There may be a drivability problem or everything may seem to running as normal. However there is some fault that must be diagnosed and repaired to avoid any increased repairs down the road.
