Vintage Bridal Gowns

Let's face it; it's all about the gown. Since a wedding is really the bride's day, her dress takes on an all important duty and helps make her the focal point of the occasion. The bridal gown shows the personality of the bride, the wedding's theme, and creates the ambience of the wedding. For some brides, especially the old-fashioned ones, a vintage bridal gown is the only choice.

There are some families where bridal gowns are passed on from generation to generation. These vintage bridal gowns are cared for, passed down to each new bride, and perhaps even altered to fit the bride. While some changes generally must be made, the overall design isn't changed. Maybe a piece of lace has yellowed or torn. With the proper seamstress, these repairs are a snap. Wearing a family dress is such a wonderful experience because this vintage bridal gown connects all of the different generations of brides. At a time when family values and traditions are at an all time low, family vintage bridal gowns are such a precious idea.

Some brides really enjoy styles of the past. Vintage wedding gowns from the twenties are very popular. These simple and still stylish dresses often fit seamlessly into today's fashion outlook. If a bride wants to the belle of the ball, she can choose a vintage bridal gown from the fifties and early sixties. These were the Southern belle dresses with huge, hoop skirts and yards and yards of lace. These have fallen out of favor these days, but if a bride still wants a Gone with the Wind wedding, this is the dress for her.

Vintage dresses from the seventies are a little on the casual side. During these years many brides opted for simple, casual weddings. These dresses might have been bought off the rack and then sold later on when a house cleaning occurred. These vintage bridal gowns are perfect for a beach wedding or a backyard gathering. Gowns from the seventies are often very feminine and are, therefore, perfect for the bride who wants to wear a dress with a history while at the same time making a very feminine statement.

Dresses from the eighties may be seen as vintage. However, these are recent enough that they seem to scream "I once belonged to another bride with a taste for over the top dresses." Unless a bride is having a Disco Wedding, these dresses aren't very popular.

Wedding gowns from the nineties and early twenty-first century are hardly vintage. They are simply considered to be "used". There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying or wearing a used dress. If the dress is in good shape and still fashionable, these dresses are a bargain. Brides can buy these in consignment shops or even at Goodwill. EBay is another place to try, but brides can't try these dresses on, which could be a problem.

Vintage wedding gowns will always be with us because they have history, glamour, and they sometimes represent symbols of family love. Since the gown does have such an importance for the bride, she should give a vintage wedding gown a try if she likes old-fashioned dresses or is working on a budget.
